Director of Special Education
Salary Range: $70,000.00 - $80,000.00 annually

SUMMARY:

Facilitates all Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Meetings, maintains IEP calendar, records, and compliance, provides curricular and behavioral support to staff and assist with the delivery of staff development. Provides input on youth placement, intake, and employee performance.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Oversees and provides supervision to therapy professionals (Speech/Language, Occupational, Physical, Music, PE, and Art).
  • Coordinates, oversees and provides guidance and direction for the Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings for each child served in the Therapeutic Day School Programs ensuring compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.
  • Monitors, oversees, collects, and evaluates student progress reports.
  • Oversees and provides guidance and direction for the Professional Development of teachers ensuring compliance with all applicable rules, regulations and Hope Learning Academy policies and procedures.
  • Provides training to teachers in orientation, best practices, etc.
  • Assists Principal and Assistant Principal in their coordination of Hope Academy’s certifications and accreditations.
  • With Principal, engages key clinical and educational staff members in identifying appropriate classroom placement to ensure constant growth and never accepting status quo.
  • Oversees and coordinates implementation of Unique Learning Systems curriculum by all educators.
  • Assists Principal and Assistant Principal in their coordination of student assessments (DLM, etc) as needed.
  • Evaluates and implements new educational programs based on community need and Springfield Hope Academy’s ability to provide.
  • Oversees the documentation of Restraint reporting to ISBE, families, and Districts.
  • Communicates with parents, guardians, staff, visitors, licensing agencies, etc. in professional and courteous manner.
  • Provides direct oversight to classrooms through morning meetings, classroom observations, and regular monitoring and reporting through the Therap system.
  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings to ensure wrap-around care (rounds, special team meetings, etc).
  • Assumes responsibility as a mandated reporter concerning incidents of purported abuse/neglect of youth, as outlined in the Agency Policies and Procedures.
  • Assumes responsibility for assuring compliance of individual rights and program delivery as defined in the Illinois Department of Mental Health Code and Confidentiality Act, as well as the Child Care Act of the Department of Children and Family Services.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

  • Master's degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • Illinois Teaching Certificate – LBS I (Limited or Unlimited) or LBS II
  • Type 75 ISBE Endorsement
  • Successful background clearance, physical, and drug/alcohol screening and the ability to meet all licensing standards of the Department of Human Services and the Department of Child and Family Services
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in special education, including teaching and/or administrative experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Experience delivering staff development training to small or large groups who work in diverse educational capacities

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Working conditions include office in school youth with autism and other intellectual disabilities; intermittent exposure to loud sounds and potential injury (due to loud youth verbalizations and youth aggressive behaviors). Environment is fast-paced, and requires frequent interaction with staff, students, and administrators. Typical day will require a mix of being seated using computer (keyboard, mouse, screen), phone, and attending meetings. Off-campus meetings will be required.
