Description:

The Grant Writer will play a crucial role in coordinating the grant development process to sustain and expand the development needs for the mission and programs of Science Museum Oklahoma. This position will be responsible for identifying funding opportunities, developing proposals, managing the application process, ensuring compliance, and grant reporting and record keeping. With the support of the VP of Development, the Grant Writer will communicate the museum's goals and objectives through grant development.

  • Support the Museum by continually researching funding opportunities from private, corporate and governmental grant-making organizations and securing grants to fund Museum programs.
  • Write compelling grant proposals and letters of inquiry using the SMO voice.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Development and Museum staff to gather grant material packages for review by the VP of Development.
  • Coordinate with the VP of Development to fulfill follow-up report requirements.
  • Work with Museum staff to maintain and gather required data to ensure compliance with grants reporting requirements.
  • Develop relationships with funders and maintain regular communication to ensure ongoing support.
  • Ensure overall accuracy and quality of all documents leaving the organization.
  • Prepare, write, coordinate, and submit grant proposals for private corporate, foundations and Government grants.
  • Maintain accurate records throughout the grant application process, which includes but is not limited to grants received and pending applications.
  • Update, post and index information and input data to maintain office records.
  • Perform routine filing of a variety of correspondence, forms, cards, records, reports, and documents related to grants.
  • Other duties as appropriate for successful museum operations.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field and Three (3) years of related work experience in successful grant writing, or an equivalent combination of seven (7) years of education and experience.

  • Strong research skills and the ability to identify funding opportunities.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of grant writing skills.
  • Ability to read and understand complex application documents.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports in an accurate, complete and timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently and with limited supervision.
  • Ability to present a positive and professional image.
  • Ability to maintain security of confidential records and information.
  • Knowledge of Excel and MS Office software applications.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and ensure compliance with complex reporting and agreement specifics.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in order to accomplish work in compliance with quality standards and deadlines.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively.
  • Ability to work under the pressure of deadlines and time constraints.

Working Conditions

This position works in an active and busy museum setting. This position works in a climate-controlled office setting and may be subjected to a fast-paced decision-making environment.

  • Work involves frequent standing and walking.
  • Some duties are performed from a seated position.
  • May require working on a computer for long periods of time, using a keyboard, or viewing a digital screen.
  • Work may include occasional pushing and/or pulling, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

This position may require the employee to drive for business purposes in either their own vehicle or a vehicle provided by the museum. Employees that drive for business purposes must be able to pass a motor vehicle records check and provide proof of insurance and a valid license to drive on an annual basis.

The employee must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Relationships

This position has no direct or indirect supervisory responsibilities. This position must maintain positive working relationships with management, employees, applicants, vendors and the general public.

Introductory Period

This position has been designated with a 90-day Introductory Period. The Introductory Period gives you time to fully learn your new role and adapt to your new work environment. It gives the Museum time to provide training, feedback and performance review. Prior to the end of the 90-days your supervisor will conduct a review of your overall performance and behavior to determine if you need a performance improvement plan, extra training, or if you are already working at full performance. Participation in, or completion of the Introductory Period does not impact your “at-will” employment relationship with Science Museum Oklahoma. You or the Museum may still terminate your employment at any time and for any reason, with or without cause. The Introductory Period also does not affect the benefits that you are offered as a regular (FT/PT) employee at the Museum. The 90-day Introductory Period simply gives both you and Science Museum Oklahoma an opportunity for learning, training, feedback and performance review.
