ESSENTIAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
- Transport patients by wheelchair, stretcher, bed, or otherwise escort patients to correct locations within VA Medical Center in a safe and timely manner (includes taking expired patients to morgue) 100% of the time.
- Transport lab specimens, equipment, supplies, and patients’ belongings.
- Consistently verify patient I.D. information against patient dispatch information to ensure accurate transportation of patients to the appropriate areas
- Make all runs available during shift and all assigned by dispatcher. Average minimum of 30 trips per 8-hour shift, arriving at the destination in time for the patient’s appointment, or in time to meet the standard amount of time it takes to go to and return from any given destination within the VA Medical Center complex.
- Complete work assignments as efficiently as possible.
- Provide excellent customer service through established guest service techniques.
- Serve as a resource to patients, family members and other medical center personnel.
- Maintain courtesy and professional demeanor at all times.
- Operate equipment safely and efficiently for the benefit and comfort of the patient.
- Identify and follow proper procedures for broken equipment.
- Provide emergency assistance to patients who become ill during transport process until clinical staff can be notified and assistance arrives.
- Comfort patients and their families by offering support and encouragement; being punctual and attentive to procedure schedules; demonstrating caring and cultural sensitivity.
- Escorts are responsible for providing and maintaining a safe environment for themselves, the patient, and their co-workers by following established policies and procedures.
- Clean transport equipment reporting maintenance needs to dispatcher or Coordinator.
- Communicate effectively with VA medical staff and dispatcher. Exercise good judgment and use good customer service skills.
- Respond to medical emergency and broadcast codes.
- Be familiar with VA Medical Center routes.
- Complete trip tickets for each run made; entirely filling in all fields and obtaining VA Staff signature. All trip tickets must be turned it at end of each shift.
- Properly utilize handheld radio, pager and cell phone to communicate with dispatcher and VA staff. Learn and use VA codes for communicating with handheld radios.
- Continuous walking throughout shift, including pushing, pulling, stooping, bending, twisting.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to push, pull, and maneuver wheelchairs, stretchers and beds with people of all statures.
- Ability to work independently and use handheld 2-way radio, pager, and cell phone.
- Ability to read, write and speak fluent English.
- Flexible, versatility, reliability and a team player.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and work different shifts to accommodate staffing needs.
- Reliable transportation.
